I got to Collins’ place early because I was anxious to see him. He was in his office on the phone and looked pissed. He had a frown I’d rarely seen before, and his voice had much authority. He yelled at somebody about what had gone down in Detroit with his business, so I wasn’t sure if my visit would be successful.

As I waited, I walked around his office and picked through some of the educational books on his bookshelves. I didn’t want to show impatience, so I sat in a chair and thumbed through, Do You by Russell Simmons. Several times, I peeked at Collins and thought about the damage I’d done and was continuing to do to our relationship. He was easily every woman’s dream, and I had the nerve to be tripping.

When he stood up, I checked him out in his tailored beige suit, shiny brown leather shoes, and silk shirt that was unbuttoned. As he caught me checking him out, he finally smiled to show his pearly whites. Moments later, he ended his call. He wiped down his face with his big, strong hands and sighed. I could see the stress on his face and hated that I had brought him more.

I closed the book and walked over by him. “Is everything going to work out with the business?” I asked.

“Yeah. My partners and I are trying to figure out how we’re going to make up for some of these losses. Do you know those fools swindled over a hundred thousand dollars from us?”

“Are you kidding me? That’s a shame. How did they get away with it?”

“Trust. We trusted the fools to deliver and sell our products, but they were stealing merchandise and selling it on the streets for half price.” Collins lowered his head. “Seems like I can’t trust no damn body these days.”

I wanted to say he could trust me, but I didn’t want to set myself up like that. Instead, I rubbed his wavy hair. “Baby, everything is going to work out. If you’d like for me to invest in your business, I will. I’ll do anything I can to help.”

“When it comes to money, Nokea, we’re not suffering. If anything we need to cut back on the bonuses for the year. That’s all.”

“I see. But again, if you need me, I’m here.”

He gazed at me but didn’t smile. “So, what’s up with you and Pretty Boy? And please don’t lie to me. I’ve been lied to enough.”

“Collins, there’s nothing up with Jaylin and me. We’ve been intimate one time since you and I have been together and that’s it. Jaylin made it seem as if we were screwing every chance we got, and that’s not so.”

He rubbed his chin, thinking about what I’d implied. “One time, huh? Well, tell me about this one time.”

“What do you want to know about it? I really don’t want to go into details.”

“If this intimate moment took place in the beginning of our relationship, maybe I would understand.
